The incident took place around 5:44 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Lord & Taylor store in Stamford located on High Ridge Road, said Stamford Police Capt. Richard Conklin.

According to Conklin, the two men, in their late 20s or early 30s, casually walked up to the case in the fine jewelry department.

Both pulled out hammers from a backpack one of the suspects was wearing, smashed the glass and quickly snatched up eight to 10 Rolex watches, Conklin said.

The men then quickly left the store and got into a dark-colored SUV that was last seen fleeing on High Ridge Road.

Police believe the men had entered the store earlier to  "case" the location, Conklin said.

The suspects are described as being black men of medium height. Both were wearing dark clothes and hooded sweatshirts, Conklin added.

Police are working with the store’s loss prevention staff and witnesses to help identify the men.

The city's last big smash-and-grab case happened at Stamford Town Center in 2014 by members of a Detroit gang who had traveled to the area, Conklin said.

During that incident, three men entered Sidney Thomas Jewelers and used a hammer to smash a display case and grabbed 22 Rolex watches worth more than $250,000.

The department hopes to have a video of the recent robbery to share with the public shortly.
